Speaking to PC Gamer, the developers stated that a PC port was a priority from the earliest stages of development. The fact that the game would see such a release informed a host of technical decisions that were made even before the first home console release, and a team of highly experienced Rockstar veterans were tasked with making sure the game ran at its best on the platform.
The developers had this to say about the timeline of the game’s development:
While Rockstar kept their plans for a PC port rather quiet for the first several months of the game’s release, it’s perhaps unsurprising that such work was planned out well ahead of time. Grand Theft Auto V is a true powerhouse in terms of commercial success, and both Rockstar and distributor Take-Two Interactive will have been eager for the game to reach as wide of an audience as possible.
Indeed, we were given hints that the title would grace the PC by a Rockstar job opening that hit the internet even before the initial release of GTA V. If nothing else, fans were desperate to see confirmation of this news so that the game could receive as vibrant a modding scene as its predecessor GTA IV has found following its PC release.
What this means for fans is that GTA V on PC shouldn’t be a sloppy port — although the screens and footage we’ve seen thus far will already have settled anyone worried about that. With some intriguing new content and a healthy dose of visual polish, there are plenty of reasons to make a return to Los Santos for anyone with a suitably high-spec PC.
Grand Theft Auto V releases for PC on April 14, 2015.
